dc.description.abstract | The purpose of the study: In the dual monarchy era, especially after 1873 there was a strong economic development in Hungary, and its results and specialties in Vas County were presented by our previous studies. Such a rapid development also brought to light the dark side of business life: amongst embezzlement the regulatory shortcomings also appeared.
Applied methods: The records of savings banks were preserved fragmentarily by the Vas County Archives, there are neither ledgers nor board reports kept from the above mentioned period. We could rely on the Szombathely Regional Courts criminal suit’s documents as primary sources and the annual printed balance sheets, data of the Hungarian Compass and the contemporary press as secondary sources.
Outcomes: This study deals with the three cases of embezzlement which were followed by the national press at the time. In addition, one of the cases were discussed at the meeting held for savings banks’ reforms in 1899 in Miskolc. The cases in question reveal human errors and regulatory shortcomings. | hu |
